A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT SOUTHWESTERN ROANOKENORTHEASTERN FLOYD AND CENTRAL MONTGOMERY COUNTIES THROUGH 645 PM EDT [wind: 40 MPH, hail: 0.00 IN] https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/p.php?pid=202508212206-KRNK-WWUS81-SPSRNK

Erin is truly an extraordinary hurricane, one of the biggest and most powerful we've seen in this part of the Atlantic. Mercifully it'll spare the U.S. an otherwise extensive and devastating blow, but we won't escape major coastal problems. My latest ⬇️

Mid-latitude SSTs are record warm for the time of year in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and the N Hemisphere warmth is pushing above the 2023 all-time record (1982-present OISST data).

In 2023, the North Atlantic was the big story, but now it's the North Pacific.

See Hurricane Erin in 3D 🌀

Erin went through a period of rapid intensification, strengthening from a Category 1 to a Category 5 hurricane in around 24 hours.

@NASA’s GPM Core Observatory passed over Hurricane Erin at 6:23a.m. EDT on August 16th, while it was intensifying.

Rips were observed again during Tue, including this strong rip observed by Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue's drone. Dangerous rips & rough surf will continue Wed through Fri as swells from Hurricane Erin impact the area beaches.

Highway 12 completely submerged north of Hatteras Village, as seen by webcams from NCDOT. The next two high tide cycles will likely bring more severe overwash than what we've seen so far this evening.
